About Buy Fresh Buy Local

Buy Fresh Buy Local (BFBL) is a National Initiative from the FoodRoutes Network (FRN) to promote locally grown & produced foods as well as working to involve consumers in the building of a new local food system. Local sustainable food benefits our local economies, environment and health and just plain tastes better. FRN works in partnership with community-based organizations across the country to help these groups increase their capacity to design, launch, and implement successful "Buy Fresh Buy Local" Chapters. There are now close to 50 chapters across the US in 28 states.

The Buy Fresh Buy Local Pennsylvania campaign is run by the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), which serves as the Regional Chapter Affiliate Coordinator. Beyond PASA, there are multiple local chapters that work on BFBL campaigns specific to their geographic location in the state.

Here in Philadelphia, White Dog Community Enterprises’ Fair Food coordinates the “Buy Fresh Buy Local Greater Philadelphia” chapter, which aims to help consumers find locally grown products in the marketplace. Our Philadelphia Local Food Guide (in print and on the web) currently lists over 100 locations — farmers' markets, independent retail stores, farm stands, restaurants, and Community Supported Agriculture farms — where consumers can purchase locally produced food in and around the city of Philadelphia. Through our Buy Fresh, Buy Local logo and other marketing materials, shoppers can identify those products produced in Greater Philadelphia.

PASA

ePennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) is a nonprofit organization working to improve the economic and social prosperity of Pennsylvania food and agriculture. We work with the farmers that grow our food, the consumers that eat the food, and those concerned with the ecological well-being of our environment and natural resources. PASA is the only statewide, member-based, sustainable farming organization in Pennsylvania and the Northeast, and is one of the largest in the nation. The Association seeks to address the sustainability of the entire food and agriculture industry, and places great value on efforts to build bridges between various and disparate participants in the food system.
